What is S.E.O.?

S.E.O. stands for “Search Engine Optimization.” It’s the practice of optimizing your website (or blog) to rank higher in search engine results (like Google).

This is important because you want to rank as high as possible, so potential clients will see your website first in their search results.

I specifically work with the website platform, Showit. So I’m sharing my favorite tips for boosting SEO on your Showit website.

Check out the top 5 reasons I love Showit (and I know you will too!).

SEO for Photographers: Add a Showit Blog

My number one tip for increasing your S.E.O. on your Showit website is to make sure you have a Showit hosted blog.

Seamless Website and Blog Design

Showit offers several tiers of subscription, and the lowest does not include a blog. The top two, however, include a WordPress blog with your website.

This is awesome, because WordPress is an amazing (and mighty powerful) blog platform. And Showit is an equally incredible design platform for websites. Together, they’re unstoppable!

When you have a WordPress blog hosted through Showit the design can be seamless (which is so much better for creating a high end and trustworthy brand). Even better, your blog is hosted under the same domain as your website (i.e. yourbusiness.com and yourbusiness.com/blog) — which means that your blog posts are contributing to your S.E.O.

Blog Regularly and Consistently

However, it’s not enough to just have a blog — you need to be blogging, regularly and consistently.

Like, at least once a week.

When you’re blogging regularly about your business, you’re naturally using keywords (search terms) that your ideal client would use to search for you.

Search engines “see” that your regularly updating your blog (and therefore your website) will valuable that information in your niche — so you’ll begin to rank higher in their results.

And voila, your ideal client sees your website!

Page Title

Page titles are the titles that will appear when your website is in a “tabbed” window.

Setting up a proper page title on all of your website pages is one of the best things you can do for your SEO. Here are a few key tips:

  • Max 50-70 characters
  • Create a unique title for each page
  • Lead with your keyword (i.e. Colorado Springs Family Photographer)
  • Include the brand name (i.e. Jessica Vallia Photography)
  • Be sure to include your location if you are a location-based biz

Meta Description

The meta-description is the text that appears below your website in a search engine listing. While it’s not directly related to your SEO, it’s till important to have a good meta-description.

A good description will help your CTR (Click Through Rate) — meaning if an ideal client sees your site in search results, a good description may be the determining factor of whether or not they click to actually check out your site!

See? Very important! Here are a few key tips:

  • Max 150 characters
  • Be honest
  • Be enticing
  • Be conversational
  • Don’t try to “game” the system (by shoving a bunch of keywords in your description)

SEO for Photographers: Your Website Images

Another great way to boost the SEO for your Showit website is to make sure your images are working for you!

The thing about image files is that Google and other search engines can’t “read” them. They’re just image files. But there are a few things you can do to help the search engine know what the image is about (and also boost SEO):

Rename Your Image Files

When your camera takes a photo it creates an image file, and gives it a super generic name — something like DSC_001.jpg

So that’s the only thing a search engine has to go on. You can help it decipher your image by renaming the file to something more descriptive (i.e. colorado-springs-family-photographer_01.jpg)

I batch rename and resize all of my clients’ images in Adobe Lightroom before I ever upload them into their Showit account.

SEO Title

The next step is to give each image on the website a unique SEO title. Just like our page title, it’s important to create that variety for all of your images. So, even though we’ve renamed the file (and that’s what will automatically show in the SEO Title) we want to create a new SEO Title for each.

To access the image panel in your Showit account, simply click on an image (make sure it’s an actual image placed on the canvas, not a “canvas background image” or a gallery), and you will see the “Image” panel on the right hand side.

Click inside the SEO Title box and create a new title for that image. Keep it short, descriptive, and keep your keywords in mind.

Image Description

The description in the Image panel is the meta-description for the individual image. Again we want to be descriptive since this is Google’s only way to “see” the image. Showit suggests describing the image like you would to a blind person.
