Have you ever caught yourself thinking, “I’m too old to start a business”? Or maybe you’ve thought, “It’s too late for me, I’ve missed my chance.” I’m here to tell you, those thoughts are completely false. Trust me, I’ve been there, and I’ve had those same thoughts. But they were just as unhelpful to me as they are to you now. Today, I’m diving deep into why it’s never too late to start a business and how you can turn what might feel like a disadvantage into your biggest strength.
Let’s start with a little personal reflection. There was a time when I used to have these defeating thoughts like, “I’m too old,” “It’s too late,” or “I’ve missed my chance.” These thoughts can creep in like uninvited guests, throwing doubt into your plans and ambitions. But here’s the thing: they don’t serve you. In fact, they hold you back.
I’ll be honest, for a long time, I let those thoughts stop me from reaching my full potential. I believed that there was some kind of invisible clock ticking away, and if I didn’t achieve certain goals by a particular age, then that was it—I’d lost my opportunity. But that mindset was both exhausting and limiting. Eventually, I came to realize that success has no age limit. It’s a freeing realization, and I hope that you, too, can come to embrace it by the end of this post.
Now, let me share a personal story. At 26 years old, I made a bold decision that changed the trajectory of my life. I decided to go back to college and get a degree in graphic design. To be completely honest, it felt risky. There were doubts creeping in like, “Am I too old for this?” I looked around at my classmates, most of whom were younger than me, and it was hard not to feel a little out of place.
But guess what? That decision to go back to college was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. The skills and experiences I gained during that time became the foundation for everything I’m doing today—running my own business, working with incredible life coaches, and even launching my podcast, Superbloom. Going back to school at 26 may have felt like starting over, but in reality, it was setting me up for my future success. So, if you’re thinking about starting over, know that you’re not alone. It’s never too late.
I can’t emphasize this enough: learning is never a waste of time. Whether you’re 26, 36, or 56, investing in yourself through education is always a good idea. And I’m not just talking about formal education here. Learning new skills, attending workshops, or even listening to insightful podcasts (like this one 😉) can all contribute to your growth.
In fact, many successful entrepreneurs continuously evolve and adapt by learning new things, no matter what stage they’re at in life. So don’t let age be the reason you hold back from expanding your knowledge.
Here’s what I’ve learned along the way: the older I get, the more life experience I bring to the table. And that is one huge advantage. Every mistake, every success, every challenge I’ve faced has made me more prepared to not only start but run my business. My life experience is my superpower, and I bet yours is too.
Think about it—when you’re younger, you might have energy and enthusiasm, but experience? That’s something that only comes with time. And experience is invaluable in business. It helps you understand people better, make informed decisions, and anticipate challenges that younger entrepreneurs might overlook.
For instance, before I became a luxury brand strategist, I dabbled in a lot of different things: theater, dance, beauty school, and even photography. All of these experiences shaped who I am and gave me a unique perspective in the business world. They’ve allowed me to pivot when necessary and draw from a deep well of knowledge when tackling new challenges.
Whatever your journey has been, those experiences are your secret weapon. Maybe you’ve raised kids, traveled the world, or spent years in a different career. All of those experiences will serve you in ways you can’t even imagine yet. The key is to embrace them and recognize that they give you an edge in business that no one else has.
There’s a damaging myth floating around that success has a timeline—that if you haven’t “made it” by a certain age, you’ve missed your shot. This idea has led so many people to believe they’re too old to start a business, but it’s time to bust that myth wide open.
I’ll let you in on a little secret: there are so many successful entrepreneurs who didn’t even start their businesses until later in life. Vera Wang didn’t design her first dress until she was 40. Colonel Sanders started KFC at 65! Success isn’t about age; it’s about determination, perseverance, and passion.
When I went back to college at 26, I thought I was starting late, but now I realize how laughable that idea was. You are never too old to start a business or to achieve your dreams. If anything, starting later gives you a leg up because of all the experience you’ve gained over the years.
Now, if you’re reading this and thinking, “Okay, Moriah, this all sounds great, but I still feel like it’s too late for me,” I want to stop you right there. Because here’s the truth: it’s not too late. In fact, there’s no better time than right now to start going after what you truly want.
There are so many benefits to starting a business later in life. For one, you likely have more financial stability than you did in your 20s. Maybe you’ve built a career, saved some money, or even paid off some debt. This kind of stability can allow you to take calculated risks that might have felt too daunting when you were younger.
Additionally, you probably know yourself better. You’ve had time to figure out what you’re truly passionate about, what makes you tick, and what kind of work lights you up. That self-awareness is a huge advantage in business because you can align your work with your true purpose.
If you’re still feeling unsure, let me ask you this: What’s really holding you back? Is it fear of failure? Fear of judgment? Whatever it is, I encourage you to confront it head-on. Every day you wait is another day you could be building the life you truly want. And here’s a little secret: everyone, no matter their age, has fears and doubts when starting something new. The difference between those who succeed and those who don’t is that the successful ones do it anyway.
At the end of the day, the idea that you’re too old to start a business is just that—an idea. It’s not a fact. It’s not reality. It’s a limiting belief that you have the power to change. I’m living proof that it’s never too late to go after what you want. I went back to college at 26, launched my business, and now, I’m helping other women build their luxury brands and live their dreams.
So, if you’ve been sitting on the sidelines, waiting for the “right” time, I’m here to tell you that the right time is now. You have so much to offer, and the world needs your unique voice, your experiences, and your vision. It’s never too late to start a business, and it’s never too late to create the life you’ve always wanted.
And if you need some encouragement along the way, you know where to find me—right here on the Superbloom Podcast. Let’s go after those dreams together. ✨
