First of all, let me wish you the happiest of Thanksgivings! This is my favorite holiday and I find it a little bittersweet to be spending the day in new surroundings, far from family, friends and home. In that spirit, and to divert you from the abundance of pumpkin-spiced-butterball-black-Friday-craziness on the rest of the internet, I wanted to share a very special post with you.
My family is a pretty tight-knight group. And I don’t just mean my immediate family. Though we’re scattered all across the United States, I’ve grown up with my cousins (and they’re some of my favorite people) because of a cherished tradition. My mom’s family, descends upon the coast of North Carolina biennially (not to be confused with biannually – I looked it up) for the “Kerr Family Reunion.” For one whole week in July, across an average of three beach rental houses, thirty-some of us reunite to share family dinners, play in the sand, and enjoy each other’s company. These are some of my favorite memories, so this Thanksgiving I would like to share the 2014 Kerr Family Reunion with you.
This is my beautiful cousin, Kelly. She and I snuck down to the beach right before sunset one evening to capture a few portraits.
I showed Kelly how to use my camera and she got a few shots of me too. Thanks Kel!
Located nearby is the town of South Port that likes to celebrate Independence Day in a big way. A group of us will usually go there once or twice for lunch and antique shopping. I go to take pictures. And lunch – obviously.
One of our favorite beach trip traditions is Putt-Putt night. My dad always takes the “kids” for a round of mini-golf at Oak Island Jungle Golf. I say “kids” because we were in grade school when this tradition started, but the youngest of our crew just graduated high school this summer. So far no one has mentioned being to old for Jungle Golf.
Here I am with my dad <3 and I’m sporting a pretty stellar sunburn on my shoulder. Yes, that is a handprint…
I am so grateful for these people, for family and tradition. Here’s hoping you’re spending Turkey Day loving on your loved ones and stuffing your face.
What family traditions are you most grateful for? Let me know on Twitter.
Happy Thanksgiving!
