Why perfectionism gets you nowhere… fast.

Feb 29

You know at job interviews when they ask you what your biggest weakness is?  And of course you say you’re a perfectionist because honestly, if you have to choose a weakness, go with the one that has the word “perfection” in it.  It’s not really a weakness, is it?  It’s kind of a backwards way of saying, “hey, in case you missed it, I’m pretty much awesome.”

Or.  So.  I.  Thought…

See, the thing is, I am a perfectionist.  I come from a long line of perfectionists.  And it’s actually kind of hard to function as a perfectionist, especially in a creative field because nothing you ever do is “perfect” enough.  So, even with all the crazy-creative ideas floating around in my head I often don’t have much to show for them.  Because I’m afraid that the outcome won’t be good enough, often my projects are scrapped before they ever had a chance.

So was the case with this blog, for a long time.  I wanted it to be perfect.  I wanted it to match my website and the rest of my branding, and, and, and…  And well, it doesn’t.  I’ve decided I’m in a sort of experimental phase [and maybe it’s not just a phase].  Instead of waiting until everything is perfect, I’ve decided to just have fun trying new things.

I’ve been wanting to move to a WordPress blog format for a long time.  For the past two years I’ve been using Squarespace, which is nice but doesn’t have the same abilities as WP.  So here we are, on WordPress… and it’s not perfect… yet.  In fact it might get pretty messy around here for a while because I really want to experiment.  So, I guess I’m saying, please pardon my mess.

Oh, and while we’re acknowledging the fact that things are no longer matchy-matchy around here anymore… let’s just take a moment to drool over the gorgeous font that came with the WP theme.  Actually, it’s the reason I chose this theme.  The font is called Raleway and if you love it as much as I do, you can download it for free here.  [I’m a typography nerd]

Certainly this current blog design is not where I eventually want to end up but I’m in transition now.  However, I’m feeling incredibly inspired and anticipating awesomeness.
