refuse to work a nine-to-five ever again.
Not because I couldn’t hack it — but because I did.
I got the degree, nailed the interviews, made the money, followed the rules, checked every box that everyone else told me mattered.
And somewhere between the client calls and the calendar invites… I lost myself.
If you’re reading this, maybe you’ve felt that too.
That moment where you sit in your car before work, hands on the steering wheel, thinking, “There has to be more than this. My life can’t just be… this.”
That quiet dread in your chest. That sense that your life belongs to everyone but you. That you’re spending your days climbing a ladder you don’t even want to be on, toward a future you never asked for.
Because in this post, I’m going to walk you through exactly why I walked away from the career I worked so hard to build… how I got my time back, my joy back, my life back… and yes, how I now make ten times what I made at that so-called “dream job.”
And I’m also going to tell you exactly what I would do — step-by-step — if I were trying to quit my nine-to-five today.
When I graduated with my degree in graphic design, I landed what everyone around me called the dream job.
A marketing agency gig designing for Fortune 500 companies. The kind of job your professors brag about. A job your parents tell their friends about. The kind of job you’re supposed to feel proud of.
And for about three weeks, I pretended I was proud.
But then the reality hit me — hard.
The culture was toxic. I was the only woman in the office. And every day I was designing extremely corporate, extremely masculine creative for brands I didn’t care about… at all.
There was nothing artistic about it. Nothing imaginative. Nothing that lit me up inside.
And the worst part wasn’t even the work itself. It was what the work did to me.
Because I didn’t go to school to sit in a gray cubicle designing another PowerPoint deck for another board meeting.
I went because I was an artist. Because I was creative. Because I had something to say.
My soul needed to create.
And this job slowly extinguished every spark I had left.
Every day I felt myself shrinking a little bit more. Making myself smaller. Dampening my ideas, my voice, my creativity. Being “professional” instead of being me.
And I remember sitting at my desk one day thinking:
“This is what I always wanted… why am I so miserable.”
That was the moment I knew:
I couldn’t live my life like this.
Something had to change.
I had to change.
But here’s what not enough people talk about when it comes to jobs like this: the emotional cost.
By 5 p.m., every ounce of creativity I had was gone. I’d get home and collapse on the couch, too drained to even think, let alone create something for myself.
I had moved into a brand new apartment right when I started that job. And when I moved out eighteen months later, I realized I had never unpacked most of my things.
A year and a half of my life… still in boxes.
That’s how depleted I was.
That’s how much this job consumed me.
It didn’t just take my energy — it took my identity.
And when your job takes more from you than it gives, I don’t care how good the benefits are… you’re paying the highest possible price.
Your salary is not worth your soul.
Now, most people on YouTube will tell you that at this point in the story, they created a perfect escape plan.
They saved a bunch of money, built a side hustle—that took off!
They laid everything out neatly in a color-coded spreadsheet.
That is not what happened for me.
My escape plan… was barely a plan.
I kept my photography and design business alive on the side — but “alive” is generous.
It was more like… on life support.
But even though it was small and scrappy and honestly hanging by a thread, it was mine.
It was the only place I still felt creative. The only place I still felt alive.
And deep down, I knew I wanted to go all-in on that.
I wanted to choose my own clients, choose my own projects.
I wanted to wake up every day excited to create something beautiful.
And that tiny whisper — “go back to your business” — eventually became the loudest voice in my life.
So eventually, I made the leap.
But quitting? Quitting did not magically fix everything.
Let’s talk about the messy middle, because most people skip this part.
The truth is:
I barely made money for the first few years.
Not months.
Years.
Why?
Because I was stubborn.
I tried to figure everything out on my own, tried to YouTube my way to six figures, google my way into becoming a CEO.
I tried to DIY my entire business because I thought “figuring it out myself” made me scrappy and smart.
It didn’t.
It made me broke.
My bank account was like, “Hey girl… maybe “winging it” isn’t a business strategy.”
And I was like, “Shhh, I’m watching another free webinar.”
Big mistake.
Huge.
Entrepreneurship is personal development on crack.
It forces you to face every belief you’ve ever held about yourself — your worth, your voice, your money stories, your confidence, your fears. And if you don’t have support?
If you don’t have someone in your corner? It can feel like trying to run a marathon in stilettos two sizes too small.
There were so many “oh no” moments.
So many identity crises.
So many times I questioned whether I had made the biggest mistake of my life.
But here’s the thing:
I never questioned who I was.
I questioned everything else… but not that.
Because even on the hard days, I knew that choosing myself — choosing my creativity, choosing my dream — was the right thing. And choosing myself changed everything.
And now I want to tell you what I wish someone had told me back then.
What I tell my clients now.
What I would tell anyone who is thinking about quitting their nine-to-five today.
There are three things I want you to know.
First:
Get a coach BEFORE you quit.
I cannot say this enough.
Stop trying to DIY your business, trying to be the hero who does everything alone.
Stop wasting years of your life figuring out things someone could teach you in a week.
If you can hire a coach who can collapse your timeline, help you avoid mistakes, and show you exactly what to do — do it.
Money comes back. Time does not.
And I see this inside my Luxury Brand Leader program every single day.
One client told me, “People go to my website and the first thing they say is, ‘I love your website. I want to work with you.’”
Another said, “If it has to be luxury branding — it has to be Moriah.”
Another said, “When you r evealed my logo, it finally felt like me in a way I could never articulate.”
And one more said, “I used to piece together logos here, coaching there, advice from everywhere — and everything felt disjointed. You brought it all together. It finally looks cohesive, professional, aligned.”
These women didn’t grow because they had a cute logo.
They grew because they stopped piecing everything together and finally got clarity, direction, and a brand that actually attracts high-ticket clients.
Support matters.
You grow faster with support.
You become the version of yourself you’re dreaming of — faster — with support.
Second:
Make your business about the client — not you.
This is where most new coaches get it completely backwards. They build the offer they want. The website they think is cute. The program they think sounds good.
No.
If you want demand, build what your client NEEDS. Build the program they are dreaming about, the offer that solves their biggest problem. Build a brand that reflects what they value — not what you think is trendy.
This is why those Luxury Brand Leader clients get comments like, “I feel like you’re in my head.”
Because we built their brand for their ideal client — not for their ego.
When you build a client-first business, you will always be in demand.
And third:
Develop unshakeable faith — in yourself and in the universe.
This part is hard.
And it’s the part most people avoid talking about.
Entrepreneurship is not linear.
It is not predictable.
Does not care about your five-year plan or your carefully organized Asana board.
It will test you, will stretch you and will bring up every piece of fear and doubt you’ve ever had.
But if you refuse to quit?
If you keep going?
If you show up for yourself every. single. day?
You cannot lose.
Your job is to develop the mental toughness required to become the version of you who succeeds.
To grow into the woman who gets what she wants. The woman who doesn’t shrink. The woman who backs herself fully.
That mindset — more than anything — is what will determine your success.
And this is why community matters.
Why coaching matters.
Why support matters.
Too many women quit the moment things get hard.
Don’t be one of them.
So if you’re sitting at your job right now thinking, “I can’t keep living like this”… I want you to hear me clearly:
You don’t have to.
You are allowed to build a life that feels like you. You’re allowed to have freedom, abundance. You’re allowed to create a life where your creativity isn’t just tolerated — it’s celebrated.
If you’re ready to begin that transition into coaching or entrepreneurship.
And if you want the fast track — if you want the clarity, the direction, the strategy, and the brand that positions you as the high-end expert — Luxury Brand Leader is how I take you from zero to a fully branded, high-ticket thought leader in just ninety days.
Your nine-to-five won’t magically get better.
But your life will — the moment you decide that you deserve more.
